A message from Françoise

A year ago, you have given me the greatest gift I ever received. May 2, 2011 is now a date in History. The orange wave swept through Québec, Gatineau first, because you expressed loudly and proudly your desire for change, for politics to be done differently, for all of us to work together.

Even though the past year year was tumultuous, from the passing of Jack, to the fight against the backwards Conservative legislation and the budget attacking our civil service, I firmly upheld my promise to be there for you, for the causes you believe in, to represent you in the House of Commons with integrity and passion, with the help of my great team: Aline, Roxane, Shirley and Alexandre.

On this victory anniversary day, I have a special thought for the hundreds of volunteers who took time to help me reach this dream.

In all our meetings and exchanges, you, people of Gatineau transmit me this great energy which gives me the strength to go on every day and the hope that we will one day live in a fairer, more optimistic society, in which solidary will prevail.

A big thank you again, and paying my respects to Jack!

Visiting du Versant Secondary School

Yesterday, Françoise visited the students of du Versant Secondary School for the shooting of their show Sans tambour ni trompette, based on Radio-Canada's hit Tout le monde en parle. The students had excellent, thoughtful questions on federal politics, and Françoise was glad to have taken part in their season finale!

Café Justicia

Café Justicia is produced by the Campesino Committee del Altiplano (CCDA), a farmer’s union working for labour and human rights, land reform and long term social change in Guatemala.

Grown in the Highlands of Lake Atitlan, the organic and shade grown coffee is justly traded because producers are paid a rate that is approximately 60% higher than standard fair trade.  The CCDA also works to promote traditional Mayan agriculture.

The coffee process involves essential sorting stages before producing a first grade quality cup of coffee.

Your purchase will help CCDA and Education In Action in raising funds and consciousness for social justice projects. Education In Action is a volunteer based house building initiative supported in part by the PSAC Social Justice Fund.

Funds raised through the sales of Café Jusitica helps to purchase building materials for the desperately needed homes in displaced communities. Volunteer brigades travel each year to Guatemala to build homes in these communities.

ABOLISHING THE GUN REGISTRY IS AN INSULT TO VICTIMS’ MEMORIES, LAMENTS MP FRANÇOISE BOIVIN

ABOLISHING THE GUN REGISTRY IS AN INSULT TO VICTIMS’ MEMORIES, LAMENTS MP FRANÇOISE BOIVIN

GATINEAU —  Françoise Boivin, NDP MP for Gatineau, condemned final passage of the bill to abolish the long-gun registry, calling it a real insult to victims’ memories and a historic step backward for public safety.

“In dismantling the gun registry, the Conservative government is being incredibly insensitive to victims and their families,” said Boivin. “This irresponsible decision endangers public safety. I am especially outraged by the support of certain Conservative senators who claim to work on behalf of victims of crime.”

Boivin noted that the gun registry was created in 1995 following the terrible killings at the École Polytechnique, which took the lives of a number of young women. A study conducted by the Institut national de santé publique showed that an estimated 2,100 lives have been saved since the gun registry was established, proving that it is an effective crime prevention tool.

She also applauded the Government of Quebec for mounting a legal challenge to the Conservatives’ decision. “I encourage the federal government not to waste public money defending its ill-advised position before the courts,” said Boivin. “If Quebec wants to keep the registry data, that is its choice, and we have to respect it.”

FEDERAL BUDGET WILL HIT WOMEN HARDEST, SAYS FRANÇOISE BOIVIN

FEDERAL BUDGET WILL HIT WOMEN HARDEST, SAYS FRANÇOISE BOIVIN

The Conservatives are clearly not doing enough to promote gender equality

OTTAWA — The Conservative budget does not meet the needs of women in Gatineau, Quebec or Canada, says Françoise Boivin,NDP MP for Gatineau.

“This is a budget that does very little for women,” said Ms. Boivin today in the House of Commons. “Women from all over the country are contacting me to express their disappointment.”

The increase in the eligibility age for Old Age Security (OAS), from 65 to 67 years, will affect women far more than men, as the majority of women depend on OAS for an adequate income. Similarly, the cuts to the public service will affect women in Gatineau more than men, as 55% of the labour force is made up of women.

“I strongly encourage the Minister for Status of Women, whose area of responsibility was completely overlooked in this budget, to do her job,” said Boivin. “The government must adjust these budget measures to reflect the gender equity that it likes to boast about so much.”
